Monday (10/4) Update

Today went very well. We ended up having to stay another day/night since Nathan didn't pass the carseat test. I think it ended up being a good thing since we have nurses bringing us food, meds, and help 24/7. Nathan is doing great. He is feeding every 3 hours. We breastfeed for about 15 minutes and then he gets 20mL of pumped breastmilk in a bottle. Then I pump for about 15 minutes and store his next feeding plus extra in the fridge. My milk is really coming in now and I get more at each pumping session. I am happy about that because if I produce 2-3 times what Nathan needs at a feeding, we can start a nice stockpile of milk for later down the road.

I am starting to feel so much better. I am still taking the pain meds because I don't want the pain to get out of control, but my pain is probably no more than a 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 (mostly 0-1). I am physically healing perfectly.

As far as emotionally, I have had some rough moments. There are things that just get me going and I can't stop (which everyone says is good and I should get it out whenever I need to). I am sure I will post more on this later, but for now we are just dealing with things as they come.

We are looking forward to going home tomorrow, even though we will miss the hospital. We've had the best nurses, lactation consultants, and doctors.

Tonight I handled a feeding all by myself without waking Lee up. I got everything setup (Boppy, bottle of breastmilk, and pumping supplies), woke Nathan up, changed Nathan's diaper, nursed him for 15 minutes (great nursing session), fed him his bottle, got him swaddled, pumped for 15 minutes, made bottles for the next feeding sessions, and cleaned up all the bottles/supplies. I am really proud of myself.

I am off to bed. Goodnight! :)

Update on Ashley and Nathan

Yesterday went really well. I am doing really good considering I had a c-section roughly 30 hours ago. I have gotten off of the catheter (YAY for going to the bathroom), off of my IVs (YAY for not having a huge thing to push around and tubes all over the place), and off of the liquid diet (YAY for real food). I am on pain meds as I know from experience that they are necessary. I am able to get up, stand up, sit in a chair, walk around, and basically can do most things. I am planning to take a real shower tomorrow (Sunday) and put on some of my cute post partum PJs. It will feel nice to feel even more human.

Nathan had a great day. He has been eating every 3 hours. We worked with a lactation consultant to get my started pumping and to get Nathan started nursing. He had a few good nursing sessions today (YAY!). We are basically nursing him for about 15 minutes on one side, giving him about 15ml of formula, and then I pump to help get that supply going. It's going really well. I am hoping that soon my milk will come in and he can mainly take that (eventually only take that).

He is just beautiful and so sweet. I am so thankful for how well he is doing considering he was only 35 weeks. I am enjoying every minute of holding him, singing to him, rocking him, feeding him, and just loving on him.

Tomorrow (Sunday), will be our last full day at the hospital and we will all come home on Monday. I am so thankful for the awesome nursing staff. They have taken such amazing care of me and Nathan. They have also been so sweet and sensitive to everything going on with our loss of Alexis. We couldn't ask for a better set of doctors and nurses.

Our family and friends have been amazing, whether here in person, over the phone, and/or over the Internet. It has been so awesome knowing that there are tons of people praying for us, sharing their messages of comfort and excitement for us, and just loving on us. We are truly blessed.

And of course, God is there always. He never leaves us or forsakes us. I know that He has a perfect plan for everything and that is probably the only thing that has kept me going. Lee and I (and our family) have had our joys and excitement over Nathan and our sadness and pain over Alexis. It comes in waves. I plan to write more about how I am doing with Alexis' loss, but I don't have the words to put together an articulate post right now. I'll just say that it is hard, and sometimes I completely lose it, but through it all we have God, our family, and friends and that makes it bearable.

Thank you all!

Arrival of Our Twins & Departure of Our Sweet Baby Girl Alexis

As most of you know, we went in for our routine 35 week ultrasound Friday. Everything looked great for our son, Nathan. He measured big and had a great heartbeat. When we went to check our daughter, Alexis, she was measuring smaller than we expected and we didn't measure a heartbeat. We thought that was strange but the ultrasound technician sent us to a room without telling us anything (they have to wait for the doctor to do that).

As we waited I had this overwhelming feeling that something wasn't right as we have always seen and heard a heartbeat. I immediately prayed that whatever news we heard, God would be there to comfort us. I really just thought that maybe she wasn't growing as good and that we might have to have them early since we had discussed possible things that can warrant earlier delivery. When the doctor came in, she said, "I have some bad news." Immediately my heart sank. She said, "Baby B doesn't have a heartbeat and has passed away." At first they said it was Nathan, but I knew Baby B was Alexis. We were in limbo for a minute, but we found out it was definitely Alexis.

I immediately cried uncontrollably. I was completely overwhelmed with grief. I have to say that in the 9 years I have known Lee, I have maybe seen him shed a few tears a handful of times. To say he was overcome with grief is an understatement. We discussed going ahead and delivering Nathan. I will say that even though I was overwhelmed and my heart ached, I knew that God had His hands on Nathan and that everything would be great with him. Lee and I called our family and wept in the room until we could compose ourselves enough to leave and head home to get our stuff so we could head to the hospital.

We got to the hospital and they monitored Nathan and he was doing great - great heartbeat, very active. They scheduled my c-section for roughly 5:00pm since I had something to eat at 9:00am. The c-section went beautifully. I kept focusing on Scriptures that were encouraging. It took a while since I have had a c-section before and had a good amount of scar tissue, but at 5:45pm I heard the greatest sound in the world, Nathan crying. Immediately came the tears. At that point I was still hoping and praying that maybe the tech was wrong and I would hear my precious Alexis cry. Needless to say, I didn't. The nurse came and told me that Alexis was beautiful and looked just like Nathan. Lee brought Nathan over to me and I got to love and kiss on him. He is so beautiful and I believe he looks just like Daddy's baby pictures. I opted not to see Alexis at that time as I knew that would be too much to handle while still finishing up my c-section.

We got everything finished up and I went to my room under the impression that Nathan would be in the NICU until 10:00pm (4 hours for observation). Well, he was doing so great that he came out in about an hour. I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to hold and kiss him. Lee and I had some time with him and then Luke came in and then family came in in groups. It was amazing having this precious heathy baby boy and enjoying him with our family.

Lee and I wanted to see Alexis and hold her and let our family have some time with her before we sent her to the morgue, but she didn't look good and it was too much for me to take, so I only saw her for a quick second and they went ahead and took her. I want to remember her from the sweet ultrasound pictures and active kicks in my belly for the past 35 weeks. They did give us a box with her footprints and some of her special items (blanket, hat, bracelets). I know we will cherish it forever.

That night went really well. We had Nathan go to the nursery for a few hours so we could sleep and he could be well taken care of. He was eating about every 3 hours (he was taking formula). We are working on nursing, pumping, making bottles, and giving him formula. He is doing really well. He had an APGAR of 9 and the only thing he has had a tough time with was his body temperature regulation, but we got that under control. He is so beautiful. I can't stop looking at him.

I am doing great. This c-section is nothing compared to the last one I had with Luke (I think not laboring for 26 hours might be part of that). I have been able to get up and sit in a chair. I got all the hospitally stuff off (IVs, etc). I was on a liquid diet until last night, but I got to have a yummy dinner tonight.

We are just so thankful for our God, our family, and our friends. God is everpresent and will take us through this. Our family is amazing and is always here for us. Our friends are incredible and their messages have been so encouraging. We appreciate all the prayers, comments, and support. We can't express it enough.

Here is the Scripture I've been meditating on (thanks Krisanne!)

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you." - Isaiah 43:2

I Just Can't Wait to Meet These Babies

Sometimes I get this overwhelming feeling of, "I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET THE BABIES!!!" Well, I just got it. I really love being a mom and can't wait to get a promotion to three kids. Luke has been one of the biggest blessings in my life and I can't wait to have 2 more blessings. This pregnancy has been so amazing, carrying two little miracles, feeling them grow and their movements each day. I can't wait to hear their first cries, hold them for the first time, hug and kiss on them, see Lee become a daddy again, and see Luke become a big brother. It is so amazing! To say that God has blessed me would be an understatement. I pray that I can show Him everyday just how thankful I am for these blessings.

Procardia --> Feeling Better --> Nesting

So I have been taking Procardia for almost 2 weeks and last Thursday my OB doubled the dosages since I was still having painful contractions. I seriously didn't think it was ever going to help since I had contractions all weekend. Well I woke up on Monday and felt pretty good. I rested all day and was able to make a huge dinner - Salisbury Steak and gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, green peas, corn, and homemade apple pie for dessert. It took me about an hour and a half to cook and clean up. It was tasty and well worth the effort.

Well I thought it was a fluke until I woke up this morning and felt great. I changed the linens on our bed and Luke's bed, started laundry, and cleaned our bathroom (all before coming downstairs for breakfast). I made myself an egg white veggie omelet. I put away a ton of dishes from last night's dinner. Then during Luke's naptime, I scrubbed the kitchen (including the refrigerator), scrubbed the guest bathroom, reorganized and purged stuff from the pantry, vacuumed the first floor (even took the wand out and got the nooks and crannies). I've been rebooting laundry all day as well.

I would say that I am in the nesting phase. Of course that could mean the babies are coming anytime or won't come out until the scheduled c-section date (3 1/2 more weeks). We'll see, but it feels great to feel great and be able to do things that I normally do. I feel somewhat human again. Of course I will probably be resting the rest of the night. :)

Weight Loss Plans

Well I've gotten to the point that I am the biggest I've ever been (even bigger than I was with Luke which I swore I never would be). I started out this pregnancy 30 pounds heavier than I started out my pregnancy with Luke (I was overweight starting out with Luke as well). I am really proud of myself though because I haven't gone nuts, have drank a ton (literally) of water, and have managed to only gain 28 pounds at 34 1/2 weeks. My goal was no more than 35 and I am pretty sure I will do that (if I do gain more, I would imagine it will be water retention this late in the game).

That being said, I imagine the day I go to deliver the babies I will be roughly 90 pounds overweight. YUCK! I am more realistic this time and my goal is to get down to 155 not 140. So, I've already started thinking about what I plan to do to lose the baby weight plus the weight I needed to lose before I got pregnant.

Here's my plan (I know it might not all work out like this):

In the beginning, since our lives will be so crazy, my goal will be to drink a lot of water (will also help with breastfeeding), eat when I am hungry and stop when I am satisfied (not full), and aim to eat something every couple of hours (not wait until I am starving). I am not really going to worry about what I am eating as a lot of the food will be out of my hands (others bringing us meals). I will focus more on listening to my body and watching the portions. Of course I will aim to get in fruits, veggies, dairy, lean proteins, and whole grains as much as possible. And I will not be woofing down junky stuff. I am hoping that with breastfeeding and just losing the initial weight (babies, placentas, fluid), I will lose a decent amount. I am pretty much planning to do this until the babies sleep good at night and we get on a schedule.

Once the babies are sleeping good at night (Luke did 12 hours at 3 months old and did great pretty much after about 5 weeks) and we have some sort of schedule, I am planning to officially start Weight Watchers. When Luke was a baby, I joined the meetings and I found that to be a huge part of my success. I am not sure if I will do meetings yet, but would definitely like to if it would work out. Either way, I will be following the POINTS system since I know it works, it's easy to keep up with, I can eat anything I want (as long as it fits into my plan), if I am still breastfeeding I get extra POINTS, and when I start working out I get extra POINTS. I LOVE WW POINTS!!! I am really hoping to start after New Year's as I think that is an attainable goal. Hopefully when I start I will already have off the pregnancy weight and just be working on the weight I need to lose before I got pregnant.

I am really hoping to start working out once the babies are sleeping through the night consistently. I don't plan to do it before that because I will be worn out enough and don't want to exhaust my body even more (that can really slow weight loss and could hurt my milk supply). When Luke was a baby I joined a great gym with awesome childcare when he was 2 months old and went 4-5 times a week with no problems. This time, I have 2 babies and a 5 year old so it will be a lot more work to get to a gym (get everyone ready, load everyone up, drive, drop everyone off, workout, pick everyone up, drive home, unload everyone - not to mention behavior/diaper changes during the workout time).

I am going to see how working out at home goes first because I could workout without all the added time of getting there and getting home (over an hour) plus the worries. I am hoping that when the babies nap in the morning, I can get Luke to play in the playroom with a TV show and do the elliptical for a half hour. That's my starting plan, mostly cardio. I would love to do this 3-5 times a week.

Once I get in some sort of routine, I will add light weights and ab work. When Spring comes, I am hoping to get out the double jogger stroller and start intervals of jogging and walking. Lee also wants to get bikes for Christmas so that would be a great workout. My goal is to eventually be able to do my higher intensity workouts and get my body back where it was 3 years ago.

I realize that these are probably lofty goals and I will definitely adjust as needed, but I always think it's better to have a plan. Otherwise, come next Summer, I'll still be walking around saying, "I should lose this weight."

I don't have a deadline as I have a lot to lose and am pretty much starting from the worst I've been (minus the knowledge I have from last time) and will have a lot of work to do to get a fit body. It took almost 2 years with Luke so I would imagine at least 18 months. I am fine with however long it takes as long as I am working at it each day and making progress. It's worth it. I am planning to start another blog (yes I love blogging) devoted to my weight loss journey.

Top 11 Tips for Twin Pregnancy

#1 - Hydrate
When pregnant with twins, you need more water than with a singleton (which is more than you need when not pregnant). My goal each day was 12-15 glasses of water.

Ways to Stay Hydrated:
Drink a tall glass of water right when you wake up
Drink a tall glass of water with each meal and snack
Keep a 16-24 oz bottle of water with you at all times and drink

#2 - Rest
All expecting moms need lots of rest, but when you are carrying multiples, you need even more. My goal each day was to really listen to my body and rest as needed. I always rested during my son's naptime (roughly 3 hours), after dinner until bedtime, and during the day as I felt I needed it. At the end, I pretty much rested all day. If you are tired, take a nap or go to bed earlier as you don't sleep as good at night (especially at the end). Let others help you with housework and errands.

#3 - Take Your Prenatals and Any Other Supplements Your Doctor Recommends
I took my prenatal vitamin everyday and I know it helped the babies and me to get those missing nutrients. When I got further along, my doctor had me on Vitamin D to prevent pre-term labor. I never missed a dose. Figure out a consistent time to take them and buy an extra bottle (or make a baggie) to keep in your purse so you never miss them.

#4 - Register Early
As soon as you find out the genders, go start your registry (some people even do it earlier but I didn't want to have to do it twice). I started mine in the store and did a lot online when I got home. It was exhausting even at 18 weeks, so don't put it off. Have an organized list (I put mine on here) and that will make it a lot faster. The more work you do ahead of time, the less running around the store.

#5 - Get the Nursery Ready Early
Again, as soon as you find out the genders, get going on the nursery. If you have the basics (crib, furniture) setup and the room painted/decorated, it will make it easier when you have your showers and have a lot of stuff to prepare. My goal was to have it done before the 3rd trimester.

#6 - Have Your Shower(s) Early
I highly, highly recommend having your shower(s) early. You get what you need and have enough energy to put it away, wash baby stuff, etc. You won't be as big and uncomfortable so you can enjoy it. And, you (hopefully) won't be on bedrest so you can attend. Again, my goal was to have my showers before the 3rd trimester.

#7 - Pack Your Hospital Bags Early
I didn't do mine until 34 weeks (4 weeks before my scheduled c-section) and it was fine, but I would recommend doing it as early as possible. If you don't actually pack the bag, get all the stuff you will need and have it laid out (pack if possible) and have a list of what to pack (personal care items) next to it so you can pack quickly.

#8 - Never Hesitate to Call Your Doctor
There are a lot more things that can go wrong or happen earlier with a twin pregnancy. If you have any concerns, call your doctor. Some people don't and they are in pre-term labor. It's better to go and be perfectly fine, then to not and have a problem.

#9 - Follow Doctor's Orders
Again, there are a lot more things to watch for and be careful of when pregnant with twins. Do whatever your doctor says (whether it be take a specific medicine, rest, pelvic rest, drink more water). They know what they are talking about.

#10 - Be Prepared for 1 Million Questions/Comments
When you are pregnant with twins, you will get a ton of questions/comments, some friendly, some annoying, and some down right rude. Just know you will be getting them, figure out some simple responses, and pray that you can be nice no matter what. I've had to bite my tongue a lot (more with comments than questions). From what I've heard, it just gets worse when the twins are actually born and you take them out in public.

#11 - Stock Up on Diapers, Wipes, and Any Other Baby Needs You Can
I had 2 diapers/wipes showers and got a ton of diapers and wipes (and other baby bottom needs). I also started couponing and watching for good deals on them about half way through. My goal is to get diapers for 10 cents each. We set up a shelf in a closet and just collected all sizes. My hope is that we won't have to get them too much and when we do, we always get them on sale and use coupons. My favorite places to get diaper deals are CVS and Rite Aid.

Gift Bags for Luke

I really want to make the babies' arrival exciting and fun for Luke, but most importantly don't want him to feel left out or forgotten. I decided to make gift bags for Luke for each day we are in the hospital when the babies are born. I think it is a two-fold plan: 1) he has a special bag of treats when he comes and 2) he has stuff to keep him occupied and snacks to keep his belly full.

I put 2 juice boxes, a baggie of cheez-its, a baggie of goldfish, a baggie of pretzels, a baggie of cereal, a fruit snack, a baggie of M&Ms, and a baggie of Reese cups in each bag.

I also wanted to add some toys to the bags to keep him occupied and give him something fun to enjoy. We got a few coloring books, packs of crayons, an Elmo stamp, a couple of animal figurines, a new CARS car, and a Viking hat and weapon. I also pre-ordered a Veggie Tales movie and got a couple for free, so when they come in, I'll be adding those.

Here are the bags:

Like I said, each bag has the same snacks.
Bag #1 has the Viking dress up stuff.
Bag #2 has a coloring book, crayons, and animal figurine.
Bag #3 has a coloring/sticker book, crayons, an Elmo stamp, and animal figurine.
Bag #4 has a coloring book, crayons, and the CARS car.
I'll probably put the movies in Bags #2 and #3 since he will be there the longest those days.

33 Weeks Babies Bump

This is my 33 week babies bump. I am behind on posting since my camera batteries died after we took it. I will post 34 weeks later on.

34 Week Survey

How Far Along? 34 weeks - no more than 4 weeks left :)

Stretch Marks? Yes, but they aren't that crazy (yet)

Sleep? I toss and turn and have to readjust a lot, plus bathroom breaks, but overall I am getting some sleep. I sometimes take a short nap if I need it during the day. I rest a lot so that helps.

Best Moment of the Week? Taking Luke to his Big Sibling class. He loved it and he was so sweet to his plastic baby. He kissed it a lot. We also got to see some newborns in the nursery and there was a boy and girl next to each other. They were so cute and snuggly. I got really excited about meeting our babies in a few weeks.

Genders? Baby A is a boy (Nathan Reid) and Baby B is a girl (Alexis Faith). I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET THEM!!!

Belly Button In or Out? Out

Cravings? This Week's Big Craving: Buffalo Wings, All Cravings: water, ice, apples, bananas, cheese toast, pizza, pasta, hearty meals, onion rings, bacon cheese fries, cookies

What I Miss? Comfort. Doing things I normally do. Sleeping all night (of course that won't change for a while).

What I Love? That we are in the home stretch and things are going pretty good (minus these yucky contractions). Growing the babies. Knowing I will meet them in no more than 4 weeks.

What I Am Looking Forward to This Week? FINALLY packing my hospital bag and the diaper bag, getting the carseats in the van, spending a weekend with just Lee before the babies come, ultrasound on Friday, and just growing the babies, resting, and relaxing.

Milestones? Hitting 34 weeks with a completely closed and thick cervix (even with the contractions). Knowing that the babies would be fine if they were born now. Only having at most 4 weeks left.

Feeling the Babies Move? Not as much as they are running out of room, but enough to ease my mind.

Other Thoughts? I am just so thankful for these babies and getting this far without any complications. I can't wait to meet them!!!

Prayer Requests? Please just continue to pray for my health and safety (and as little discomfort as possible) for the last few weeks of the pregnancy. Please pray that I can go as long as possible (hopefully 38 weeks) so the babies are the biggest and healthiest they can be. Please pray for a safe delivery and smooth recovery. Please pray for a smooth transition to having the babies at home. Please pray that even when we are tired, we are loving, kind, peaceful, patient, and self controlled with one another.

Contractions = Another Trip to the OB

Well after 2 trips to L&D last week and getting a prescription for Procardia and my contractions calming down for a few days, they started back up last night. I had them about every 5 minutes until I went to bed. They were annoying and hurt a bit, but I figured I would ride it out and go to bed (I did not want to have to wake Luke and go to L&D all night). I felt them somewhat through the night, but managed to sleep.

Well as soon as I woke up today and got ready, they started back up. I had them all day today at least every 15 minutes and at times every 5 minutes. I decided to call the OB before they closed so I wouldn't end up in L&D. Of course she wanted me to come right in. She listened to the babies (they were great). She poked me and said Alexis is head down (way down) and Nathan is feet down. There is a lot going on down there ;).

She checked my cervix and I was closed and thick. YAY! No signs of pre-term labor. YAY! We are really hoping I can make it full-term (hopefully even 38 weeks), but even if they come now they will be fine (minus a little NICU time possibly). She decided to up my dosage of Procardia to double what I am on now (as long as I don't get too dizzy/sick from it). I am to take my Procardia, hydrate, eat small meals (I haven't been able to eat much lately), and rest (not bedrest). I think I can handle that.

I am just praying to make it full-term (38 weeks would be awesome). I can handle any ache, pain, annoyance, etc that I have to. I just want two healthy, hearty babies. I know the longer they stay in the better. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We greatly appreciate it!

1 Month from the Babies' Birthday

Well, if the babies and I can hold out until my 38 week c-section date, October 22nd, 2010, then that makes today 1 month from their birthday. Either way it means that I have no more than 30 days until I get to meet my precious baby boy and girl. In some ways it seems like it has gone fast (like when I think I only have at most 4 weeks to go), but in some ways it has seemed slow (waiting for check-ups and ultrasounds, not being able to do as much so the days go slower).

Either way, I know that everything is on God's timetable. He gave us these babies at the right time, He gave us two babies for a reason, and He has a perfect plan for me and the babies. Whether they come in the next couple of weeks (before term), they come after term (36 weeks), or they come on their c-section date, I know God has His hands on them and will make everything work together for the good (Romans 8:28). I am so thankful to have made it this far with virtually no problems. He has given me a peace the whole time that I would make it full-term and have healthy, hearty babies. I know that many have been praying and I believe with all my heart that God not only hears, but answers our prayers.

Please just continue to pray for my health and safety during the pregnancy, for the babies to grow perfectly, for full-term healthy, hearty babies, for a safe delivery and smooth recovery, and for a smooth transition once we get the babies home. To God be all the glory, honor, and praise for these blessings!

What Do I Need for Twins?

Well I haven't actually had the twins yet and will probably come back to this post and edit and repost it down the road once I see what we will actually use (of course each baby is different), but here is a comprehensive list of what we have gotten for the twins. May I just say that we have truly been blessed by people's generosity. We had a lot of the stuff from Luke which people so graciously gifted to us. This time when we found out it was twins the outpouring of gifts and loaning of things has been overwhelming. We are so thankful for everything we have been blessed with.

Here's the list (with my recommendations of brands/models in parentheses):

TRAVEL GEAR:

2 Infant Car Seats (Graco Snugride) - I highly recommend having the infant carriers/car seats as they click right into your car, you can carry baby (babies) in the house/other places in them (great when they fall asleep), and if you have a travel system stroller, you can just pop the carrier in there and be on your way - I know that everyone's budget is different and some opt for the convertible carseat from the beginning but I found this to be a livesaver with one and imagine it will be even more awesome with two

2 Convertible Car Seats (Britax) - These will be needed down the road (roughly 6-12 months) and can be used (depending on the weight/height limit) for a few years.

2 Booster Car Seats (Graco Turbobooster) - These will be needed down the road even further (3-4 years old) but they will be in them for a while so I recommend a quality one like the Graco.

1 Double Stroller (Graco Quattro Tour Duo) - Like I said above, I highly recommend the travel system if your budget or registry allows. It is worth it for the first 6-9 months (or longer depending on the size of your baby (babies)). The great thing about this stroller is you can snap both carseats in, it has cup holders, a place for your cell phone and/or keys, and a huge amount of underneath storage.

1 Double Jogger Stroller (Phil and Teds Double) - This is a luxury item in my opinion, but if you are a runner/jogger/walker or just want a great durable double side-by-side stroller for parks and zoo visits, this is a great thing to have.

2 Umbrella Strollers (with connectors to make into 1 side-by-side stroller) - I loved having an umbrella stroller in my trunk for those quick trips places (where I didn't need a whole lot of stuff). It was light and easy to get out and put away, plus it was small so it would fit anywhere. It will be nice to have these 2 so Lee and I can each take a baby as needed and with the connectors, I can make it a double in no time.

2 Baby Pouches (Baby Bjorn) - I never used one with Luke, but I imagine these will come in handy. We got two from a friend and I think it will be great for me and Lee to each be able to carry the babies (like maybe around the park or when we go places and don't want a huge stroller).

2 Car Mirrors - These are great so you can see the baby from the front seat.

1-2 Diaper Bags - I have 2 diaper bags (one from Luke and one I was gifted this time) and I plan to keep them both stocked. I am planning to carry one and keep one in the van as a backup. Diaper bags are a matter of preference. Some people like backpacks, some like over the shoulder. Some like designer bags, some like basic. I recommend one with lots of pockets for all of the babies and your things as well as a pad to change them on.

NURSERY:

2 Cribs - You will definitely need 2 cribs down the road as they get bigger/more active. The biggest thing to look for is that they don't have the drop side (as they are constantly being recalled). I also like something really sturdy feeling.

2 Crib Mattresses (Simmons) - Make sure it fits perfectly into your crib. You don't want any space as that can be a hazard.

4 Mattress Protectors - I like to have 2 per crib so when I wash one I have another one to put on immediately.

6 Fitted Crib Sheets - I like to have 3 per cribs so they always have clean sheets and I don't have to worry about getting behind.

2 Crib Bumpers - Yes, I know there is controversy over bumpers, but we used them with Luke and never had a problem. If you don't feel right using it, don't. Luke loved to cuddle with his as he got older.

2 Crib Skirts - Not a necessity, but they sure are cute.

2 Sleep Positioners - I loved this with Luke as he had some gas and it would help if he didn't lay flat back.

Armoire - Again, not a necessity, but they look great and hold a lot of stuff. You could always hang the clothes in a closet and get a small dresser.

Changing Table - It is great to find one with lots of drawers or space underneath for your diapers and wipes. I also put extra sheets, blankets, burp clothes, and bibs in mine.

Changing Table Pad - Makes a comfy place to change baby. Make sure you get one with the "belt" so you can keep the baby safe.

3 Changing Table Pad Covers - Again, like the sheets, I like to have 3 so I don't get behind on laundry and they have a clean cover for the changing table pad. I prefer the nice soft ones as they are naked on there a lot.

Diaper Pails (Diaper Champ) - I love the Diaper Champ. You use your own trash bags versus having to get refills made specifically for it. I prefer to have one per floor so you don't have to carry dirty diapers all over the house. Of course some people just use their trash can which would work as well. I just love this product.

Glider - I love having a glider to rock/glide the babies in. It is so relaxing. I prefer to have one with an ottoman because I can put my feet up and get really comfy.

Co-Sleeper (Arm's Reach) - This goes right by the bed and the babies can sleep in it. If you get The Original you can fit a baby (or babies) in it until the max weight of 30 pounds. That is what we got for twins. When we had just one, we used a bassinet next to the bed.

3 Co-Sleeper Sheets (Arm's Reach) - Again, I don't like to get behind on laundry and not have a sheet so I like to have extras.

2 Pack n Plays (Graco) - I love the one with the bassinet and changing table feature. You can set it up and use it as a crib and have your changing table right there. I like to set them up in spaces like the den or bonus room. As they get older, they are great for traveling.

4 Pack n Play Sheets (Graco) - Again, you can't go wrong with extra sheets.

Diaper Organizers - These are little boxes that you put diapers, wipes, and maybe extra clothes in and put around the house where you hang out a lot.

Other Decorative Nursery Stuff - Lamps, mobiles, valences, wall decorations.

Blankets - I love baby blankets for wrapping them, putting over them when you are out, and for putting on the floor to play on. Of course you can register for these, but in my experience a few people will always give you them as they are so sweet.

8 Receiving Blankets (per baby) - These are great for swaddling the babies early on, for putting over the babies when you go out, and for putting on the floor for them to play. They are thinner than other blankets and are just so great.

ENTERTAINMENT:

1-2 Swings (Fisher Price/Graco) - Some babies love swings, some don't. I like the small travel style since they don't take up much space, are easy to store, and can be carried places.

1-2 Bouncy Seats (Fisher Price) - Some babies love bouncy seats, some don't. These are great to put the babies in when you need a break. You can also feed them a bottle in it.

1-2 Bumbos (Bumbo) - I never used these with Luke but my sister swears by them. Once babies can hold their heads up, you can put them in these. They have trays as well so the babies can have a snack in them. Some people use them like highchairs and feed the babies in them. I'll let you know how I like them.

1-2 Bumbo Play Trays (Bumbo) - Like I said above, these click onto the Bumbo so you can feed them.

1-2 Exersaucers - Luke loved this. I would have to make him get out of it. He would have stayed in it all day. They are great for play and interaction.

2 Boppys (Boppy) - I loved this item. It was great for nursing a single baby. I also could lay Luke on it and he could look around.

4 Boppy Covers (Boppy) - Again, when I wash one, I have another one to put on. Keeps the Boppy clean.

1-2 Playmats - These things are fun for the babies to lay/play on.

Toys and Books

CLOTHING:

10 Onesies (per baby) (all sizes) - You don't need to register for clothes. You always get clothes. Consignment sales are great because they have tons of barely used clothes for dollars.

4-6 Sleepers (per baby) - Don't register for sleepers either.

4-6 Shirts (per baby) - Don't register for shirts.

2 Swaddles (per baby) (Swaddle Me) - Luke loved to be swaddled. I loved the Swaddle Me because they had velcro and that kept the baby tightly swaddled.

4-6 Sleep Gowns/Sacks - These are great for nighttime because you can change the baby without undoing clothes. Don't register for sleep gowns/sacks.

10-12 Outfits (per baby) (all sizes) - Don't register for outfits.

Hangers

DIAPERS/WIPES:

Tons of Diapers (all sizes)

Tons of Wipes

Diaper Rash Cream

FEEDING:

Twin Nursing Pillow (EZ2 Nurse)
- From what I've heard, if you plan to nurse twins, you must have this. I used a Boppy with Luke, but I think this looks great. If you don't plan to nurse, you don't need this obviously. I'll let you know how it goes.

Breastpump (Medela Pump in Style) - Even if you plan to exclusively nurse, you might have times you need to pump. I had to pump one side and feed Luke on one side because I had so much milk. If you exclusively pump, you definitely need a great pump. Obviously if you formula feed only, you don't need a pump.

Breast Milk Collection Bottles (Medela) - You want to have an amount that keeps up with your pumping frequency. I'd have a few on hand and if you find you need more, you can always get more.

Breast Milk Storage Bags - Again, you want to have an amount that keeps up with your pumping frequency. I'd have a few boxes on hand. If you need more, you can always get more.

Nursing Bras

Nursing Pads

Nipple Cream

2 High Chairs (Fisher Price) - I used a regular high chair with Luke, but this time with the twins, we have both the tall ones as well as the ones you put in the chair. We hope this will save space. If we need the tall ones (like if we have people over), we can pull them out.

2 Booster Seats - Down the road, if you have the tall high chairs, you will need these.

2 Great Wipeable Bibs (per baby) - I loathe the fabric ones for feeding. I like the waterproof, wipeable ones with the food catchers.

Bottles/Nipples - I have used all brands. I was happy with all of them, but loved the Playtex Ventaire the best. I would have at least a day's worth so you can handwash or just lad them in the dishwasher once a day.

Sippy Cups - You will need these down the road. I like all brands as long as they don't leak. I would have a day's supply.

1-2 Bottle Organizers - I personally like to handwash and put the bottles on a drying rack (aka bottle organizer) because they tend to dry better.

Bottle Brush - Great for getting the grossness off the bottles. I found washing them as I used them didn't require scrubbing. I would just put a little dishsoap and shoot hot water in them.

1-2 Dishwasher Baskets - If you load the dishwasher with bottles/nipples, you must have this. You can put the nipples in the top and the smaller bottle parts in the basket. These are great when you have sippy cups down the road as well.

BATHTIME:

1-2 Baby Bathtubs - We have two because we are planning to do "kid bathtime" and let Luke take a bath while each of us bathes a baby.

7 Washclothes (per baby) - I like to have a good supply so I don't have to do laundry as much. Plus you might need them for cleanup or boo boos.

3 Hooded Towels (per baby) - I love the hooded ones because they keep baby's head warm and dry.

Soaps/Lotions (Johnson & Johnson)

FIRST AID:

Pacifiers - We didn't use these with Luke. Some people use them, some don't. It is good to have some just in case. If you find they like them, you might need more.

Pacifier Attachers - Again, we didn't use these, but I think if you give your kids a pacifier, they need the attacher (especially when you go out) so they don't lose them.

Vaporizer

Infant Tylenol/Motrin

Mylicon - This was a lifesaver for gas. Have this on hand from day one.

Teethers

Bandages/Gauze

Vaseline/Antibiotic Ointment/Alcohol Wipes/Alcohol

Cotton Swabs/Cotton Balls

Nail Clippers/Tweezers/Scissors

Nasal Aspirators

Medicine Spoon/Dropper

Thermometer

33 Week Survey

How Far Along? 33 weeks, no more than 5 weeks to go (Luke showed me how he only has to count on one hand this morning - how cute)

Maternity Clothes? I am getting more and more nervous that I am not going to be able to go out in public soon. I have some 3X maternity shirts (long sleeve - I didn't think I would need them and if I did it would be at the very end). Luckily I have only had to go up one pants size since the tummy panel got too tight. ;) If I can't find something to wear, I guess I'll stay home in a mumu. ;)

Stretch Marks? Yes, but not as bad as I would have thought. I do itch all over them which I think is worse than the physical marks.

Sleep? What is sleep? JK. Well kind of. I have gotten so big that I get uncomfortable laying on either side. I have to roll over (which is not a pretty sight) all night to try to get comfy for a second. I usually end up rolling over again pretty quickly as the pulling of the tummy makes the other side hurt. Alexis puts her foot in my ribs at night which is about as fun as it sounds. In addition to the multiple bathroom visits, sleep has become less and less. I told Lee that by the time the babies come, I might actually get more sleep since they will get up (hopefully) every 3 hours and right now I get up way more than that. We'll see.

Best Moment of the Week? My baby shower last weekend. My awesome mother-in-law had a shower for her family and it was a lot of fun. The food was delish, we had a great time hanging out, and I got some great things (mostly diapers and wipes which we need) for the babies.

Genders? Baby A is a boy (Nathan Reid) and Baby B is a girl (Alexis Faith). I got a funny comment, "Well at least you will be able to tell them apart." Very true. ;)

Belly Button In or Out? Out and Lee told me this week that it looks "freaky". Thanks hun!

Cravings? Lately I have really had a lot of cravings. In addition to the things I normally like, this week I have craved sweets (doughnuts, homemade chocolate chip cookies, sweet potato casserole). I gave into the cookies and sweet potato casserole (everything in moderation, right?) but not the doughnuts. I am also craving my usual bacon cheese fries (had that once this week) and pizza (yep, had that). ;) I have also been craving grilled cheese and tomato soup. I really try to watch how much I eat and when more than what I eat (even though I try to eat somewhat healthy). I watch the scale because I don't want to gain too much. I think as of today, I am up 29 pounds. I am good with that since I am trying to not gain more than 35 and I have no more than 5 weeks to go.

What I Miss? Comfort. Sleep. Eating without heartburn. Going all the time. Getting all of my to-do list done.

What I Love? Growing these babies. It's a miracle and I am thankful to God everyday that He has given us these precious gifts. I can't wait to meet them in 5 (or less) weeks. I am really enjoying getting things ready for them. I love all the doting I will admit. Lee massages me, scratches me, and gets me anything I need. I am not going to complain about that part. ;)

What I Am Looking Forward to This Week? Getting Luke's Fall clothes (one thing off my list), Luke's Big Sibling class Saturday (I can't wait to see what he learns), seeing my mom and granny tomorrow for lunch (I haven't seen them in a month since I can't travel), getting the nursery decor done, packing my hospital bag (just in case - hoping I don't need it again for a few more weeks), and growing the babies.

Milestones? Making it to 33 weeks without too many issues. I did have to go to Labor and Delivery twice this week with contractions, but they were non cervix changing contractions. I just have to rest, hydrate more, and take Procardia (contraction stopping medicine) until 37 weeks. I am thankful that we haven't had bedrest or any other issues so far.

Feeling the Babies Move? Oh yeah. They are wild just like big brother. They move all the time. It was funny when they had to monitor them. They both kept kicking and "running away" from it.

Other Thoughts? I am just really thankful for these blessings and can't wait to meet them.

Prayer Requests? Please just continue to pray for a full-term pregnancy, smooth delivery and recovery, healthy babies, and a great transition to having 3 kids, especially 2 newborns. Please also pray that I am not too uncomfortable and even if I am to keep a good attitude and remember that it's all worth it. Thanks! :)

Our 2nd Trip to Labor and Delivery

Well today the contractions started back up. I had a few throughout the day, but around 3:00pm, I started having them every 5-10 minutes along with some cramping and light back pain. I let them go on for a couple of hours and then decided to call my doctor. I felt like an annoyance having to call when I was just in L&D a few days ago, but she said, "You never know if you are starting to thin out or dialate so you have to come in."

I had Luke pack a bag just in case, called Lee to meet me, and called Lee's mom to come get Luke. We got to the hospital and I was admitted. My mother-in-law showed up just in time. The nurse checked my cervix - long, thick, closed, and the babies aren't in my pelvis yet. YAY! They decided since I had had 15+ glasses of water that I didn't need IV fluids. I just had to drink a pitcher of water so I could get the contraction stopping medicine. I got it and they tracked the babies and my contractions for a few hours. They slowed down and eventually stopped. I had an irritable uterus still (of course it is iritated - it's trying to carry two big babies).

My doctor said that I am probably fine, minus the annoying contractions and the irritable uterus. She put me on Procardia (a contraction reducing medicine) for the next 4 weeks (until I hit 37 weeks). After that it won't matter if I go into labor, even though I am hoping to make it to my 38 week c-section. I am also supposed to make sure I keep my fluid intake high (12 or more glasses of water each day) and rest as much as possible. I don't have to be on any form of bedrest. HALLELUJAH! I just have to listen to my body and make sure I do what I think it needs (drink more, rest more, lay down). If I do get hard contractions or they have a pattern, I am supposed to call because my body could still override the medicine.

I am praying that this medicine helps so that I don't have pre-term labor and I can be as comfortable as possible the last few weeks. I truly want the babies to stay in until 38 weeks. I know that God is in control and He will be there no matter what happens. I greatly appreciate the continued prayers. :)

32 Week Doctor's Appointment

I had my 32 week doctor's appointment today and it went great. I gained 2 pounds in 2 weeks for 28 total which I am very happy with since I have 5 1/2 weeks to go (if I make it to my 38 week c-section) and am aiming to gain 30-35 pounds. My blood pressure was great. I got the flu shot. I measured 40 weeks so I grew 2 weeks in 2 weeks. I am glad I am not measuring more than 8 weeks ahead. I guess that means if I get to 38 weeks, I'll look 46 weeks pregnant. ;) The babies heartbeats were great - don't know the exact numbers, but Alexis' heartbeat was faster than Nathan's.

We talked about what happened on Saturday and she said she really thinks I was just dehydrated since I responded to the medicine and fluids and have been fine Sunday. I am not on modified bedrest anymore (PRAISE THE LORD!) I will be taking it easier and definitely hydrating so I don't have another incident. She seems confident I will make it since my cervix is as good as it can be even for a non-pregnant woman. I really hope so.

That being said, we talked about my scheduled c-section. I asked for her input and we went through all the scenarios. Both babies are head down so I could attempt a VBAC if they stay that way. She gave me all of the possibilities - 1) I could labor and have a successful VBAC, 2) I could labor and have no progress, 3) I could have one baby vaginally and one c-section if they both didn't cooperate, or 4) I could just go ahead and have the c-section. Since I was in labor with Luke for 26 hours and was jacked up on pitocin and never dialated past 5cm (even though that doesn't mean I couldn't labor easily this time) and I've had a c-section and know what to expect, I am going to go ahead with a c-section (even if I do go in labor on my own). I am not down with being in labor for a day, having a c-section anyways, or having both a vaginal delivery and c-section. She seemed to think that was a good choice.

My next checkup will be in 2 1/2 weeks on October 1st (Friday). I will be having another growth ultrasound that day. I can't wait to see the babies again. It's crazy to think that the next time I go, I will be 3 weeks from my scheduled c-section date. It's going faster now even though some days (and nights) feel really long.

Our 1st Trip to Labor & Delivery

Last night I woke up throughout the night with a pain in my lower right side. It didn't feel good but I didn't think a lot about it until it continued today and came with some strong contractions. Not knowing what it was but knowing whatever it was wasn't right, I called the paging system. My doctor called me back and said she wanted me to get to Labor and Delivery ASAP. We quickly packed Luke a backpack of entertainment and snacks and were on our way expecting at most to be there a couple of hours.

I got there and it really freaked me out that they basically admitted me like I was in labor. Being that I am only 32 weeks I seriously hoped and prayed that I wasn't. They took me into a real L&D room which brought back a lot of memories from when Luke was born. It was surreal. Luckily they had comfy chairs and a TV with cable so Lee and Luke were occupied.

The doctor wanted me and the babies to be monitored for contractions and to watch their heartbeats. She also wanted me to have a catheter urine check for infection. She did the catheter check which I have to say was probably one of the most painful things I've ever had done (including a 26 hour labor and C-section with Luke, multiple surgeries for my cleft palate/lip, 2 jaw breaking and re-structuring surgeries, and 2 rhinoplasties).

Then they hooked me up to monitors. Since there are two wildly active babies in there, they had a rough time keeping up with both of their heartbeats and my contractions for a consistent period of time. It took a long time. That turned out to be a good thing because my contractions weren't showing up much, but once they just checked the contractions and had me drink a couple of pitchers of water (they thought I was just dehydrated), my contractions were showing up as every 3-4 minutes.

With that the doctor decided to give me some medicine to slow/stop the contractions. She also ordered an IV of fluids and had me keep up the pitchers of water. She also decided to check my cervix and run a test to see if pre-term labor was coming in the next 14 days. The test and cervix check were not so much fun, but it was worth it to find out what we needed to know. My cervix was still closed, thick, and long (YAY!).

She had me monitored for a couple more hours while the drugs and fluids were going through me and we waited for the test. The contractions slowed down and decreased in intensity (which is what she wanted to happen). The test came back negative (YAY!) All of that meant that I could go home tonight. She said that most likely I did get dehydrated so she ordered me to drink, drink, drink (which I do a lot) and that I couldn't overdrink. She said that of course the contractions could come back since my body thinks I am overterm and if they do, I am to call and more than likely come in. She also put me on modified bedrest (bathroom, kitchen, shower, food only) for Sunday and until I come into the office on Monday. On Monday they will check everything out and let me know my marching orders from then on.

So I am at home, resting, drinking, and letting Lee wait on me (not a bad arrangement). I am hoping and praying that I don't have to make another visit to the hospital until I am 38 weeks and coming in for my scheduled C-section. It was a rather overwhelming ordeal today but I knew that God has His hands on me and the babies and that everyone has been praying for us, so I knew it would all be okay no matter what. I will just be resting, relaxing, and drinking until time for the babies (hopefully 38 weeks). Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We greatly appreciate it!

32 Week Survey

How Far Along? 32 weeks

Maternity Clothes? Yes. Trying to make the last of my summer clothes work. I bought some bigger sized maternity jeans and long sleeve shirts but I am so hot, I am thinking I might just stick to my summer clothes for the duration (unless I bust out of them) ;)

Stretch Marks? Yes, some, but not as many or as bad as I would have thought. I am very itchy now from stretching though (at least that won't last like the stretch marks I guess).

Sleep? I am having a harder time some nights as I am stretching a lot. Getting comfy takes more time and I have to switch positions a lot so that wakes me up for a bit. I go to the bathroom every couple of hours. I am overall getting some sleep and am able to take a nap somedays. Mainly I just rest a lot during the day (put my feet up and recline).

Best Moment of the Week? Scheduling my 38 week C-Section date (October 22nd at 1:30pm). Finding out I don't have gestational diabetes. YAY!

Genders? Baby A is a boy (Nathan Reid) and Baby B is a girl (Alexis Faith). I can't wait to meet my babies.

Belly Button In or Out? Out

Cravings? Water, ice, apples, bananas, scrambled eggs, homemade chocolate chip cookies, real hearty meals.

What I Miss? Comfort. Doing my normal stuff (cleaning, laundry, cooking, playing, going places, traveling). Sleeping all night comfortably (guess that is a preparation thing).

What I Love? Growing two healthy babies. Feeling them move. Knowing I am going to meet them in no more than 6 weeks. I can't wait.

What I Am Looking Forward to This Week? My 3rd and final baby shower on Sunday with Lee's mom's family. Finishing up the decorations in the babies' room. Enjoying my pregnancy and feeling the babies move a lot. Eating, resting, and sleeping without guilt. My 32 week doctor's appointment on Monday morning.

Milestones? Making it to 32 weeks (8 months) with zero complications. I pray we make it to at least 36 weeks, but am really hoping for 38 weeks.

Feeling the Babies Move? Oh yeah. They are both head down, so I feel their feet and knees higher up and their fists and elbows lower down. I think they are boxing and kicking each other. ;)

Other Thoughts? I am just so thankful to have made it this far with no problems. God has definitely been protecting me and the babies. I just hope they stay in for 4-6 (preferably 6) more weeks and grow even bigger and healthier. I am just overwhelmed with gratefulness.

Prayer Requests? Please just continue to pray for my health and safety for the last stretch of my pregnancy. Please pray that I can make it without any complications of pre-term labor or bedrest. Please pray that the babies make it to at least 36 weeks (hopefully 38). Please pray for a safe and smooth delivery and recovery. Please pray that they babies are completely healthy. Please pray for our transition at home. Please pray that I remember to keep a good attitude no matter how uncomfortable I am getting. Thanks!
